Now available for Train Simulator is Norfolk Southern’s efficient GP33ECO diesel and its RP-M4C slug partner.
Stylish, efficient, environmentally friendly – and fascinating – the Norfolk Southern GP33ECO diesel and its RP-M4C “slug” partner are now ready for Train Simulator service!
In 2015, with the expertise and capabilities of its legendary Altoona (Pennsylvania) shop complex and supported by federal and state funding for efficiency development, Norfolk Southern begin converting its aging EMD GP50 diesels into like-new, highly efficient, and environmentally friendly diesels given the designation GP33ECO.
The NS GP33ECO is a 3,000-horsepower, four-axle (B-B) locomotive powered by an EMD 12-cylinder 12N-710G3B-T3 ECO engine and equipped with an EMD EM2000 microprocessor control system. The innovative diesel is distinctive from front to back, built with a NS “Admiral cab” at the front and, at the rear, flared radiators similar to those employed on EMD SD70s. The GP33ECO meets Tier 3 emission standards and is capable of radio-control operations.
Visually similar to the GP33ECO, but unpowered, the RP-M4C slug is also equipped with an Admiral cab and EMD EM2000 microprocessor control system. While it receives its power from its partner locomotive, the RP-M4C is fully equipped to lead a consist.
By the end of 2019, Norfolk Southern had placed 28 GP33ECOs and 34 RP-M4Cs in service. Wearing a special, and striking, black and two-tone green livery, the Norfolk Southern GP33ECOs carry road numbers 4700-4727. The GP33ECOs are primarily assigned duty at Chicago (their original work location) and Atlanta, with units also appearing in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Rome, Georgia. The RP-M4Cs carry road numbers 610-660 with the earliest group (610-627, which date back to 2013) assigned to work with NS EMD GP59E or GP59ECO master units and painted in standard NS black livery, while later RP-M4Cs wear the special black-and-green livery. More GP33ECOs and RP-M4Cs are anticipated to be placed in service.
