TS18: The Airport Link
The Köln Airport Link & West Rhine: Köln - Koblenz route is coming soon, so let’s take a first look at some of the incredible, featured locations!
The connection between Cologne Hbf and its nearby international airport (which in tandem serves Bonn, the former capital of West Germany) was established in 2004 when the Cologne Airport Loop was opened.
Situated 18m below ground, Cologne Bonn Airport station is frequently served by Inter-City Express, Regional and S-Bahn services, the loop lines’ capacity is limited only by the significant freight traffic which passes along the original route, filling out the timetable for consistent action.
The S13 line of the Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn acts as one of the main connections for Cologne and its airport, working with the S19 to provide a service every 20 minutes. In contrast, the S12 line bypasses the loop and calls at alternate stations such as Cologne Airport Business Park.
Back to freight, and south of the Hohenzollern Bridge, is the expansive Gremberg Yard. This yard is situated on the Cologne Freight Bypass Railway, built specifically to keep freight out of already bustling Cologne Hbf and surrounding rail network.
Gremberg Marshalling Yard spans over 3 km and is one of Germany’s busiest; a major international freight hub and an origin & destination point for a majority of West Rhine traffic. Traction populates the surrounding lines and shunters await their next assembling duty.
The eastern bank of the Rhine is packed at all hours, with the S13 line keeping Cologne and the airport connected 24/7, and the arrival of evening freight which keeps things ever on the move. The S13’s terminus of Troisdorf is kept busy no matter the weather.
DB Regio Red shimmers under the sun, and in the Rhine, as the Köln Airport Link & West Rhine: Köln - Koblenz route is coming soon to Train Simulator! ■
